Now that we’ve reached the end of the growing season it’s a good time to give your lawn a heavy-duty renovation. As the crowning glory of your garden some work now will give you a lawn to be proud of next Spring.
Here are Garden Trader’s 4 simple steps to an Autumn lawn renovation:
Give your lawn its last cut of the year – keep it nice and short and remove all the clippings.
Remove any debris on the lawn including any leaves, stones, moss etc. If it’s looking uneven then add some top soil to even out the surface. You’ll then want to scarify in a number of different directions. If you don’t have a scarifier then a springbok rake will do the trick too. It’s not going to look very pretty for a bit but it’s an essential step in the process.
Overseed with some good quality seed at a rate of 50g per square metre. It’s good practice to seed in one direction and then the other, to ensure you get a good coverage across the whole lawn. Grass grows at anything over 6 degrees so there are still a few weeks to get the seed established, especially as there is plenty of moisture in the ground now too.
Use an Autumn fertiliser to give your lawn an extra kick.
This is all that’s needed for the Autumn but there are plenty of other activities you can do in the garden. Check out our tips for autumn gardening here.
